Ramsgate, Kent, UK 17 July 2015. A giant American Agave, native to the deserts of Mexico, is flowering in the Italianate Garden at Ramsgate. The agave, one of a pair in the glasshouse at the King George VI Memorial Park is sometimes known as a maguey or century plant as it can grow for as many as 100 years before it flowers once and then dies. The flowers are on a huge spike that is now approaching 30 feet high. Part of the roof of the grade 2 listed glasshouse has been temporarily removed to allow the spike to grow.
