As> in every new locomotive t>f the Prussian State Rail-ways, this one is eed with the Knorr exhaust steamfeed water i)re-heater. The water pump for the feedwater preheater has a cajiacity of 556 gallons per min-ute, and is placed on the left side of the engine. The brakes are ai)i)lied to one side of all coupledwheels: the Knorr one-chamhcr air brake, which is usedcan develop a braking eftort ecpial to from 60 to 70 percent of the adhesive weight of the locomotive. With theaid of the auxiliary brake, the brake shoe pressure canbe raised to 100 per cent of the adhesive weight of theengine. Encouraged by the great success attained with thePecz-Rejtc feed water purifier by the Hungarian State. Boiler for German Standard 2-10-0 Locomotive Railways, which was referred to in the January, 1923,issue of . Locomotive Engineering, thePrussian State Railways have likewise experimented withit. but because of the disastrous ending of the war forthe central powers and the internal troubles in both lands, the authorities were not allowed to finish their experi-ments : later, in Germany they began to use a quite dif-ferent contrivance, partly because the Pecz-Rejto waterpurifier is patented. The essence of this new contrivanceis that the water passes after from the feed check valvethrough to a jet pipe which sprays into the steam spaceof the boiler; so that the water is effectiully heated andits volume increased. By tliis means the scale and mudis precipitated. The atomizing of the water has provenitself in other regard, namely, that the precipitated mudwill be more porous when it is not
