Man with a falcon on Lijiang old market

Lijiang’s market, in the south of the old town, is the last preserve of a traditional way of life for the local Naxi population, as mass tourism threatens to overwhelm the town. At left, a man walks with a gyr falcon; hawking has long been popular with Naxi men, as Joseph Rock noted in his accounts of life in Lijiang in the 1920s.
