Vorticella. Polarised light micrograph of a group of Vorticella sp. ciliate protozoans. These filter-feeding protozoa each consists of a bell-shaped head and a contractile stalk that is anchored to the substrate. Hair-like cilia attached to the head are used to capture food such as algae and bacteria, and also for movement. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
