The voltageof the current furnished by the exciter E is regulatedby means of a rheostat R which, as will be seen, is con-nected in the field circuit of this machine. Another rheo-stat R is provided in the main circuit of E, by means ofwhich the field exciting current of A can be means of the switch F the circuit through the fieldcoils of A can be opened or closed. As can be seen, thestrength of the field magnetizing current of A can beregulated by both the rheostats, as R varies the currentby changing the resistance in the circuit, and R variesit by changing the voltage. When economy is practicedone of the rheostats can be dispensed with, generally fuses C C can be replaced by circuit breakers, orboth devices can be used. The niain switch D can be a 109.
