While serving there he participatedin the Sioux campaign in South Dakota during thewinter of 1890-91. He was promoted captain February27, 1887, and detailed on general recruiting service atAlbany, New York, from October 1, 1891, at whichplace he is at present on duty. OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY {regular). REAR-ADMIRAL DANlhL Rear-Admiral Daniel Ammen comes from Swisslineage, but his ancestors emigrated to tins country sev-eral generations ago. His parents went from BotetourtCounty, Virginia,to Brown County, hio, in 1816. Thesubject of this sketch was there born May 15, 1820, andentered the navy as a midshipman in 1836. In his book,The Old Navy and the New, he gives some amusingreminiscences of his first experiences, so different fromthe present day when the Naval School moulds all intoone form, at least externally. Ammen served through the various grades to rear-admiral, and retired in 1878, by request, under the actauthorizing such a step after forty years or more ofconsecutive service. 1 lis foreign service was in the Gulfof Mexico; on the coast of Labrador; in the Mediter-ranean; on the survey of the river Paraguay; on thecoast of Brazil; on the Pacific station,—anil twice on theAsiatic station,—making twenty-one years afloat.
