The result of the examination of a large number ofexamples of this disease by many investigators has establishedthe fact that it arises in portions of the chorionic villi whichremain embedded in the endometrium after the expulsion of 420 CHORION-EPITHELIOMA the main products of gestation, and especially if the villi haveundergone hydatidiform change. Some competent authorities still believe that there maybe two varieties of this disease, one arising from the epithelialelements of the chorionic villi and the other in decidualtissue. To the naked eye the tumour-tissue appears on sectionas a soft reddish mass. Histologically a chorion-epitheliomaconsists of well-defiued cells of various shapes and sizes. This tissue invades and destroys the uterinetissues after the manner of a malignant growth. It containsno proper connective-tissue stroma, or blood-vessels of itsown. (Teacher.) A remarkable feature connected with chorion-epitheliomais the discovery that some teratomas of the thoraxand of the testis contain tissue indistinguishable fromthat of chorion-epithelioma. The eroding power of the cells of a chorion-epitheliomaenables them to penetrate the tissues and gain entrance to CHOEION-EPITHELIOMA 421 veins; fragments are deported by the blood-stream to lodgein lungs, bones, and other viscera, and grow into fjeconda
