02/05/21 Crew manager, Ian Godfrey, tops up the engineÕs main tank. Just imagine, itÕs a Bank Holiday weekend and youÕre stuck in traffic behind a very slow moving vehicle. YouÕre thirsty and your water bottles are empty. Ahead of you an 89-year-old steam-powered traction engine is in very much the same predicament. Despite leaving home with 100 gallons in its tank with a further 400 gallons being towed in giant containers behind, Alicia Rose has run out of water - only two-thirds of the way into her journey. Fortunately firefighters in Ashbourne, Derbyshire are on hand to top-up the Ransoms Simms and Jefferies machine with 500 gallons of water. Chris Hutton, who bought the traction engine a year ago said: ÒWeÕre on our way from Tideswell to Klondyke Mill in Staffordshire - itÕs about thirty five miles. WeÕre meeting up with some friends for a socially-distanced Ôsteam-upÕ. SheÕs very thirsty and weÕve used more water than we thought. ÒI donÕt know how weÕd have made the journey without the help of the fire service. I was so relieved to see the fire station doors open and the crew on standby. ItÕs not an everyday thing, but itÕs almost as if they were waiting for a thirsty traction engine to turn up.Ó All topped-up with water, and with traffic already building-up behind her, Alicia Rose steamed slowly off, and Chris shouted, what sounded like: ÒTanks all fullyÓ to the firefighters.
