Color printing-presses are in use in the newspaper and magazine offices in this country, andfrom them are produced the artistic as well as the lurid styles of art. What the possibilities of the printing press are, looking at the degreeof excellence at present attained, it is difficult to predict. It would seem THE ART PRESERVATIVE 557 as if the height of perfection now had been reached. The probability is thatthe printer at the end of the first quarter of the twentieth century may lookwith something akin to contempt upon the machines which now are regardedwith so much pride. Such a thing is possible in this age of invention. II. THE SETTING OF TYPE. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the little metal pieces. NUMBERING CARD PRE8f>. of type were picked up one at a time and placed in the composing stickby hand, there was attached to the work an importance which elevated italmost to the ranks of the trained professions. In England, as late as 1817,compositors arrogated to themselves the dignity of carrying swords. Atthe close of the nineteenth century, the art is seen to be passing into thesphere of mechanics, —the methods in vogue making it entirely a mechanicaloperation.
