South Island, New Zealand - 19 May 2012. Seen here during a lumnous pink dawn, the Franz Josef Glacier is located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Remarkably, it descends from the Southern Alps to temperate forest- shown here- at less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. We first visited here in 1984; in 2012, it was easy to see that the glacier has massively retreated due to climate change and global warming.
