Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus) Sacramento County California USA


The Spotted Towhee (Pipilo maculatus) is a large sparrow in the family Passerellidae which lives in the western portion of North America, migratory in the eastern portion of it range (Rocky Mountains south to southern Texas) and resident in the Pacific Coast states. This species eats primarily seeds in the winter and during breeding season also easts small arthropods such as caterpillars and grubs, which it finds in leaf litter in forests and shrubby habitats.
