PITCHER, Nathaniel, governor of NewYork (1828-39), was born in Litchfield, Conn., in1777, but early in life removed to Sandy Hill, N. little is known of his life, either public or pri-vate. He was a member of the state legislature in1806, and again in 1815 to 1817. He was also amember of the state constitutional convention,which was held in 1821. He was a democrat in pol-itics, and was elected to congress, serving from 1819to 1833. In the state election of 1826 he was whatwas known as a bucktail, and was nominated bythat party for lieutenant-governor. He was a Jack-son man and opposed to De Witt Clinton, the oppo-sition candidate for governor. Clinton was electedgovernor, and Pitcher lieutenant-governor, and whenGov. DeWitt Clinton died, 1838, Pitch-er became governor, serving in that position from 46 THE NATIONAL CYCLOPEDIA. ^r February, 1828, to January, 1829. From 1831 to1833, he was a member of congress.
