Dr. Joel , whose biography may be found else-where in this volume, came to Lee County in1855, where he practiced medicine and con-ducted a farm for many years. Hemarried for his first wife Mattie Lee. who died. WALTER B. MERRIMAN. Feb. 27, 1893, leaving four children—Verna H., Grace E., and Walter Earl. In 1896he married his second wife, Ida Mackin, andof this union there were three sons—GlenwoodB., George C. and Clifford F. Mr. Merrimanretired from active farm life in 1896, but isstill an extensive land owner, his farms ag-gregating 970 acres, and during his connec-tion with the agricultural interests of thecounty, was well known as a breeder of thor-oughbred Norman horses. In political viewshe is a Republican, and is serving as CountyTreasurer, been elected to that officein 1902. ELMER COTTON, farmer, Hamilliin Town-ship, Lee County, 111., was born in VermilionCounty, April 13, 1862, son of Henry andElizabeth G. Cotton. During the year 1881Mr. Cotton worked in the coal mines and thenremoved to McLean County, 111., where he con-ducted a rented farm for seven years, and after-wards purchased 240 acres upon which he liveduntil 19
