Heart ventricle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the left ventricle wall (grey) of a healthy heart. Erythrocytes (red blood cells) are seen in the coronary blood vessels. The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood around the body. The left ventricle is one of the lower chambers of the heart. It receives oxygenated blood from the lungs, via the left atrium (upper chamber), and pumps it through the main artery, the aorta, to the rest of the body. Magnification: x65 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
