Processing birth certificate data. Close-up of birth certificate data being processed using a punched card system. This system involves recording and tabulating data using Hollerith cards, a form of punched cards invented in 1899. The use of punched cards allowed automated tallying of the data using machines that could read the data. The systems were used for data entry, storage and processing. Examples of such use include census data, including records of births and deaths. Photographed by Harris and Ewing in around 1940.
