Haile, William Henry, lieutenant-governor ofMassachusetts in 1890, 1891, and 1892, son ofWilliam and Sebrana Haile, was born in Chesterfield,, Sept. 23, 1833. His father, who was a success-ful merchant and manufacturer, was also the first Re-publican governor of New Hampshire, and when was quite young removed to Hinsdale, ,where the lads boyhood was passed. He received hiseducation in the public schools of the place, prepar-ing for college at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, He attended Amherst College for a year anda half, leaving there to enter Dartmouth, from whichinstitution he graduated with high honors in Haile then studied law in Springfield, Mass., andafter being admitted to the bar practised in Bostonfor a while. His tastes, however, ran in anotherdirection, and he soon removed to Hinsdale, ,where he engaged in the manufacture of woollengoods, becoming the partner of his flither and Rufus S. Frost, of Chelsea, the concern beingknown as Haile, Frost, & Co. This partnership wasvery successful, and subsequently was transformed intoa corporation entitled The Haile & Frost Manufac-turing Company, Mr. Haile becoming the early interested himself in politics, on the Re- publican side. In the years 1865, 1866, and 1871he was a representative from the town of Hinsdalein the New Hampshire Legislature, and soon afterhe returned to Springfield this State. In 1881 hewas elected mayor of that city. In 1882 and 1883he was elected State senator from the First Hamp-den Senatorial District, serving on the committeeson military affairs, mercantile affairs, banks andbanking, and manufactures.
