Katherina Kepler. Engraving of Katherina Kepler being threatened with torture implements during an investigation into whether she was a witch. At centre right her son, Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), is observing the proceedings. Katharina Kepler had long dabbled in the occult & was accused of witch- craft in 1615. She was first tried in Wurtemburg, Germany, in 1617, and threatened with torture in 1621 before her acquittal in the same year. Her release was partly due to the efforts of her son, though she died soon afterwards. Johann Kepler was a German astronomer who is now mainly remembered for his laws of planetary motion, though much of his work was about mysticism and astrology.
