He received the ordinary education of the frontier, going toschool in winter, and at all other times working on the farm. In 1839,through the instrumentality of Thomas L. Hamer. member of Congress,he was appointed to a cadetship at West Point, entering at the age ofseventeen. He was graduated in 1843. standing number twenty-one in aclass of thirty-nine, slightly below the general average of the class. Hewas assigned to the infantry as brevet second lieutenant, and was sentto Jefferson barracks at St. Louis, Mo., where he remained until May,.
