Dimmuborgir is a some 2300 years old lava flow where the lava from an eruption of the huge Krafla volcano with its ten kilometer wide caldera pooled over a small lake forming an area of fantastic rock structures. Dimmuborgir oder "dunkle Burgen" werden spektakulär geformte Lavaformationen genannt, die vor 2300 Jahren entstenden als bei einem Ausbruch des Krafla-Vulkans mit seiner zehn Kilometer großen Caldera ein Lavastrom einen kleinen See flutete.
