Saxon sundial. Vertical semicircular sundial over a doorway in the south wall of a church. This sundial has been dated between 1055 and 1064 AD and is one of the oldest sundials in Britain. The doorway has since been enclosed by a porch. The horizontal line at the top represents sunrise and sunset, while the radiating lines include divisions into the four Saxon 'tides'. The gnomon, the part that produces the shadow, is missing and would originally have fitted in the hole at top. Photographed at Kirkdale Church, Yorkshire, UK.
