Virginia prohibited the introduc-tion of slavery into any part of it, and at the close of theRevolution gave it for the common property of the UnitedStates. Captains Lewis and Clarke, of the same county in Vir-ginia, explored the vast region between the Mississippiand Pacific Ocean.
