" I tried to put on paper this deprecatory attitude, but it was too subtle for my clumsy powers of delineation. In fact, he was from first to last a very bad "sitter" and very exhausting to the artist's patience. However, he was well worth the trouble he cost, for he was as inter- esting as a harlequin in his vivid costume of black and green.
