The Star Brass Manufacturing Com-pany, of Boston, Mass., have recently gotout a patented cylinder relief and vacu- rTn _rm. SECTION OF STAR AUTOMATIC CYL-INDER RELIEF VALVE. um valve which is designed to relieveany excess pressure due to water in thecylinder and it relieves to a great extentthe vacuum caused in the cylinders whenth^ engine is drifting. This valve isspecially useful on compound engineshaving piston valves. The valve has nospring to break or corrode. As shown inthe illustration the opening marked A isscrewed to the steam cylinder, prefer-ably to the port connecting the steamchest to the cylinder and it gives a full3 in. opening. The opening marked Bhas a J^ in. pipe screwed into it, andthis leads to the live steam chamber inthe steam chest. To the opening at Cis screwed a drain plug or cock. Thevalve E is held against its seat by thepressure from the valve chambers exertedon the greater area at the top, and thevalve is lifted from its seat when a vacu-um is formed in the live steam chamber
