Until we saw this wonderful new strain in Cali- fornia last spring we hardly supposed the |\ Giants of California Cosmos, offered on page §JL 42, would be surpassed for many years. £\ Going through a block of this new Mammoth Fakcy Cosmos, which were in full bloom in May from seed sown the pre- vious autumn, we counted nearly thirty dis- tinct colors and types of flowers. It is im- possible to describe adequately these ex- it] quisite new varieties. They embrace |( many shades of crimson and mauve, also la pure white and white delicately tinted W and clouded. There are monstrous ff white flowers, with flecked and pinked edges, and pink flowers of the same type. Many of the pink and mauve |f flowers have a deep-red rim around the eye, which gives a striking effect. Some of the immense flowers, both pink and white, resemble a single Camellia, with their broad, overlapping petals, while others resemble an Anemone Japonica in form. The dark-crimson flowers resemble large, lovely ingle Dahlias. The tinted varieties aie charm- ing; in some the ground is white, flecked with both light and dark pink, while others are flushed with mauve and pink. Again, there are others with the petals laciniated to the very center; these are in four colors, —pink, white, blush, and crimson. The crimson shades of the different forms are lovely, glowing colors, from deepest crimson to light red, in splendid contrast with the filmy green foliage. The flowers measure from four to five inches across, while the plants come into bloom considerably earlier than is usual with Cosmos. Per pkt. 10 cts.; 3 pkts. for 25 cts.
