Mammals of the Miocene era, artwork. The Miocene era is the period from around 23 to 5 million years ago. The mammals shown are: a prehistoric pig (Bunolistriodon lockarti, lower left) with its young, and a family group of Gomphotherium angustidens (upper right and background), wading through shallow water. The latter is an animal related to modern elephants. This scene is based on fossils found in the Iberian Peninsula, at the Hidroelectrica site.
