Route 66, an iconic US highway, is a lonely road as it crosses the Mojave desert in California


US Route 66 as it crosses the Mojave Desert in California USA. The desert is in the American states of California Nevada and Arizona. The desert receives less than 10 inches or 250mm of rain each year. Route 66 was begun in 1926 and joins Chicago Illinois to Santa Monica California a distance of some 4000 kilometers about 2500 miles. Faster interstate highways have taken much of the traffic from the road which is often deserted as here.
