Brown,while he was in command of the regiment, and until he was killed 428 HISTORY OF PENACOOK. at Fort Stedman; after that he served in the same position forMajor Potter. Sergeant Chadwick was at the siege of Petersburg, December,1864, to February, 1865 ; the battles of Fort Stedman, March 25and 29; battle of Petersburg, April 2, and capture of Petersburg,April 3, 1865. He was recommended to the secretary of war for. Sergt. Hale Chadwick. a medal of honor by Capt. E. F. Smith of Co. B, EighteenthRegiment, and by Col. and Brevet. Brig. Gen. J. M. Clough,commanding the regiment at that time, for gallant and merito-rious conduct at the battle of Fort Stedman. He was honorablydischarged June 10, 1865, by reason of the close of the war. Sergeant Chadwick came to Penacook shortly after his dis-charge from the army. He was then a good all-round athlete, EVERETT L. DAVIS. 429 proficient in swimming, wrestling, boxing, etc., and was able tolift 800 pounds with his hands alone, although weighing but 150pounds and only five feet six inches in height. He first engagedin the grocery business in company with C. H. Fowler, and twoyears later, in 1867, gave that up and bought out the dry-goodsstore of Geo. W. Abbott, later, in company with his brother John,adding the boot and shoe line to the business. In 1870 he boughtout the milline
