Youth Justice Board Tagging is, like voice verification and satellite-tracking, a form of electronic monitoring. It involves attaching an electronic tag to the ankle (or wrist) of a young person so that an electronic monitoring team can check he or she is at a certain place between certain hours, day or night. The Youth Justice Board. Believes that tagging is a very good way of keeping track of young people who need to be under surveillance. Using tagging, we can ensure that young people stay indoors at key times when they might be offending, and hence help them avoid “ hanging out with the wrong crowd”. It can also help improve family relationships, and bring stability and structure, which is often lacking in their lives. Tagging is most effective when used with other measures, such as “human” tracking — in other words, when a member of the team (often a volunteer mentor) visits them at home, and ensures they get to work/school and other appointments. Individual Support Orders are court orders only available for 10-17 year olds which can be attached to 'stand alone' ASBOs and impose positive conditions on the young person to address the underlying causes of the behaviour that led to the ASBO. An ISO may last up to six months and can require a young person to attend up to two sessions a week under the supervision of the youth offending team. Breach of an Individual Support Orders, is a criminal offence which may be punished by way of a financial penalty.
