Thomas, son of John, was also born at Ratcliffe, June6, 1605. He was a sea captain. During the Protectorateof Cromwell, while on a mercantile voyage, he met aDutch privateer in the English Channel, and capturedher. As a reward for his bravery the owners of thevessel gave him a silver cup, and Cromwell conferred onhim the command of a ship of war, and later, the title ofrear admiral. He married Katharine Gray in England. Thomas came to this countrywith Governor Winthrop in 1630, having command of the Talbot, the vice admiral of the fleet. Winthrops fleet consisted of eleven vessels, havingon board about seven hundred people, two hundred andforty cows, and sixty horses. They sailed from Gowes onApril 8, 1630, and after a stormy voyage, four vessels,the Arabella with Winthrop on board, the Talbot, theAmbrose and the Jewel, reached Salem, June 12. ByJuly 8, all the vessels had arrived. Not liking thevicinity of Salem, they soon left for Boston, and dis-tributed themselves in Gharlestown, Watertown, Graves settled in Gharlestown. He made sevenvoyages to England, afterwards commanding the Trial,the first large vessel built in Boston, in her long voyagesto Bilboa and Malaga. He died July 31, 1652, Anable and godly man. His wife died February 21,1681. The
