The Oto Fire Festival at the Kumano Region in Wakayama Japan Asia


The Kumano Region,with its high concentration of prestigious jinja or Shinto shrines,is known for its religious of these many shrines is the Kamikura Jinja,where every February is held the festival of fire clled the "Oto" Festival. In this festival, some 2000 men will hold torches made from pinewood and run down a stone stairway making it look loke a waterfall of fire. This is a festival for men to test their bravery and on the day of the race women are strictly forbidden from entering the mountain where the festival is held.
