Eastern sea routes to China, 19th-century map. This map depicts some of the islands of the Malay Archipelago. The seas and islands shown include: the Celebes Sea, the Banda Sea, the Flores Sea, the Timor Sea, Molucca Passage, Gillolo Passage, and Pitts Passage. The islands at upper centre and centre are the Maluku Islands (Moluccas or Spice Islands): Gillolo (Halmahera), Bouro (Buru) and Ceram (Seram). At lower left is Timor. Part of New Guinea is at centre right, part of Celebes (Sulawesi) at upper left, and part of New Holland (Australia) at bottom right. This nautical chart also includes depths obtained by soundings, and relief shown by hachures. There are seven coastline profiles (centre right). This map (Sheet II) was produced in 1839 by Scottish hydrographer James Horsburgh (1762-1836), working for the East India Company, and published in London.
