Place Jalabert with a water fountain in Mazamet in southern France, is a popular resort for outdoor activities such as cycling and hiking. The small town lay at the foot of the Montagne Noire (Black Mountains) with acres of forests on the edge of the Languedoc National Park – the southern most extension of the Massif Central (geologically the oldest part of France). Mazamet was once the largest wool-producing town in the world, importing wool from many parts of the world. The textile industry expanded, thick flannel, cotton, pullovers, ties and traditional French berets were all produced locally.
