Born in Sweden and trained as an accountant, Eric Sundström (1866-1933) started his career in photography in the 1880s in Copenhagen, where he acquired a job as a photographer's assistant. After moving to Finland in 1890, he first got a job at Atelier Fritz Hjertzell. Four years later, he set up his first photography studio. Sundström then spent short periods living in Stockholm and in St Petersburg, until 1911, when he settled permanently in Helsinki. He opened his photography studio, Atelier Eric Sundström, on the Korkeavuorenkatu street, branching out from portrait photography.

Sundström also made his mark as a photographer of high society. The pinnacle of his career was probably photographing the King of Sweden Gustaf V, when he visited Helsinki in August 1925. Sundström applied to the king to become the court photographer, and he was granted this title. One speciality of Sundström's famous studio was silhouette photographs. For these, the profile of the subject was photographed against the background light of the studio window. The face was underexposed and the negative was finalised with a coating colour.
