Scrapie disease test. Molecular biologist using a microscope to study a biopsy sample taken in a case of scrapie. Scrapie is a disease that affects sheep and goats. It is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that is caused by a virus-like prion which damages nerve function. Here, the red areas indicate the presence of the scrapie prion. Other examples of TSEs are bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or 'mad cow disease') in cows, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans.
