In these schools the boys are taught painting, carpen-try, shoemaking, and other trades. The girls are in-structed in cooking, baking, sewing, and Ul branches ofplain housekeeping, the purpose, in short, of these schoolsbeing to civilise and Christianise the native MISSIONARIES AND THEIR WORK II9 At Juneau, Sitka, Unalaska, St. Michaels, and threeor four other points along the coast, the Russian Churchis still labouring, especially with the natives, among whomthere are a large number of communicants. This church,the first established in Alaska, had a few—a very few—noble exceptions among their priests who did good workfor the natives. But while they were solicitous for thespiritual welfare of the natives, their attendance at schooldid not seem to be desired or encouraged. The Roman Catholic Church has had in Alaska, sinceit passed into the possession of the United States, anumber of earnest workers in their cause, principal amongwhom are Father Barnum, Father Althoff, and FatherTosi. The former has spent a number of years in theinterior, principally along the Lower Yukon; FatherAlthoff labouring in South-east Alaska for over sixteenyears, during which time he founded at J
