INDEPENDENT COMPANY INFANTRY,PATAPSCO HE Patapsco Guards Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, an IndependentCompany of Infantry, was organized at Ellicotts Mills, Mary-land, September 25, 1861, to serve three years. On the expira-tion of its term of service the original men, except veterans,were mustered out and the organization, composed of veteransand recruits, retained in service until August 17, 1865, when itwas mustered out of the military service of the United Statesby reason of the close of the war and by orders of the War Department. The Patapsco Guards performed guard and provost duty at Ellicotts Mills, Md., andat York, Harrisburg and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. During the Gettysburg cam-paign it took part in a skirmish with the enemy at Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, June28, 1863, and again, during the McCauseland raid, near Chambersburg, Pa., July 30, casualties from death in this independent company during its term of ser-vice was four enlisted men,
