But at the extreme caudal extremity of the series—in theregion of the costse spuriae—the downward direction of the nerves outstripsthe slope of the ribs, and towards the free extremity of the ribs the nervesleave the shelter of the sulcus costae and come to lie free in the intercostalspace, or on the upper margin of the rib bounding the space below (see%-7). In this connection the eleventh intercostal nerve is of peculiar interest,for its usual disposition is that it runs obliquely downwards across its.
