The monuments in these two new quartersof the town were unworthy of the city of which they now formed part, andAmenothes III. consequently bestowed much pains on improving them. Heentirely rebuilt the sanctuary of Maut, enlarged the sacred lake, and collectedwithin one of the courts of the temple several hundred statues in black graniteof the Memphite divinity, the lioness-headed Sokhit, whom he identified withhis Theban goddess.^ The statues were crowded together so closely that theywere in actual contact with each other in places, and must have presented.
