Although the reverse has been asserted, they appear with nearly equal frequency in both sexes, during the period which in- tervenes between the ages of forty and seventy: in a few instances they have been met with in young children. The magnitude which some of these excrescences attain is surprising. (Fig. 35.) Bate- man states that there is one in the British Museum, which is eleven inches in length by two and a half in circumference. From three to six inches is by no means an unusual size.
