He again re-ceived honoral)le mention for his conduct in the Seven Davs Biographical Sketches 349 especially in the engagements at (Jarnelts and (iuldings farms, lie waswith the arni} in the Maryland campaign the following autumn, and atAntietam, Sept. 17, 1862. by carrying orders under the lue of the enemy,he won the rank of major and assistant adjutant-general, receiving hiscommission as such shortly after the battle. .\t Iredericksburg in De-cember, at the request of Andrew .A. Humphreys, he accom-panied that officer to look over the ground. preparatory to an assaulton the enemys works, and in the Chancellorsville campaign in the springof 186,^ he was again active in discharging his duties, again receiving thecommendations of his superior officers.
