The Carliles have had a long and honourable connection withthe industries of the town, and not a few members of that familyhave been distinguished for public services and literary first of whom we have any record is John Carlile,. Provost Cahlile, 1752-1835. born in 1703, who came from Annan, and settled in Paisley in1742. His son, William, appears in the Directory of 1784 asa thread manufacturer, although he may have begun businessbefore that date. He was the author of an interestino- articleentitled New Description of Paisley, which appeared in theGentleman s Magazine, in May, 1787, which contains numerousdetails regarding the weaving and other industries in Paisley 58 The Paisley Thread at that time, and from which we extract the facts given atpage 23.
