Edward 'Ed' Carroll Stone (born 1936), Voyager project scientist, holding a model of NASA's Voyager spacecraft at a news conference held at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC, USA, on 12 September 2013. This news conference marked the point that NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft became the first human-made object to reach interstellar space. The 36-year-old probe is about 19 billion kilometres from the Sun. As well as the Voyager projects, Stone worked on several other NASA probes during his career. He was director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) from 1991 to 2001.
