They are splendid in the permanent border where they pre- sent a display that is most unusual and striking. After having become established they will produce yearly stout Ilower spikes that measure 6 to 10 feet in height. They bloom in June or July. They do best in a deep sandy loam enriched with well-rotted manure and in a well-drained sheltered sunny position. Spread out the thick roots in their natural position, taking care that they are not injured, as they are quite fragile. Place the crown so that it is covered with 3 inches of fine soil. They are hardy, but the young sprouts should re- ceive some protection against late spring frosts. Bung-ei. A great favorite growing 6 feet high. Has heavy long spikes solidly set on the upper part with deep yellow blooms. $ each. Elwesianus. This is a real giant with flower spikes that will reach a height of 10 feet if grown under favorable conditions. Has soft pink blooms in June. $ each. Himalaicus. The elegant spikes reach a height of 6 to 8 feet. They are thickly set with waxy white blooms enhanced by golden yellow anthers. $ each. Him-Rob. Another giant growing 6 to 10 feet in height. It flowers in June, when the bright rose-pink blooms arranged on a strong spike are most impressive. $ each. Robustus. Grows 8 to 10 feet high and has an extra- large spike set with magnificent rose-pink blooms. Makes a gorgeous display in June. $ each. Shelford. A late bloomer at its best in July.
