Slipped disc. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through an inter- vertebral disc (orange) showing herniation. The disc has ruptured and expanded past the vertebra (black circle) and is putting pressure on the spinal cord (green, centre). The intervertebral discs separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae) from each other and cushion them. If one becomes displaced and puts pressure on surrounding nerves, it can cause back pain and even paralysis. Bed rest is the best treatment, although surgery may be required if the symptoms are severe.
