Phalaropes Wilson's Phalarope Phalaropus tricolor (Vieillot) Status: Wilson's Phalarope is a common transient statewide and a local summer resident in the central and west, primarily at Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Refuge. It has bred at least once in Lincoln Period of Occurrence: This phala- rope has been recorded as early as 2 February and as late as 5 December. The normal time span is from 4 April to 20 October. Kansas has a small breeding population, and most birds travel north of the state to breed. The northward migration finishes about 31 May, and the southward mi- gration commences in late July and runs through 20 October. Breeding: There are few nests known here, although breeding is not uncommon in the Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Refuge areas in the summer. Nesting records are available from Barton, Lincoln, Staf- ford, and possibly Meade counties. The nest, usually located in a wet, marshy area, is a slight depression in the ground lined with plant material. The female apparently makes the nest with the male adding the lining (Johnsgard 1979). The female lays the eggs, then the male 271.
