Small flocks, early in au-tumn, are occasionally seen on the coast of Massachusetts, andsometimes high in the air their almost melodious whistling isheard as they proceed on their way to the South, or inland tofeed. Their prey appears to be chiefly insects; and two whichI had an opportunity of examining were gorged with ants andtheir eggs, and some larvae of moths in their pupa state. Thesebirds both old and young are good food. Bonapartes Gull ranges throughout North America, breedingin Manitoba and northward, and migrating by inland and coastroutes to and from its winter resorts in the southern portions of theUnited States. Small numbers of these Gulls are seen on the New Englandcoast during the summer, but no evidence has been produced oftheir having nested in this vicinity. It has been
