In the garden are oranges and lemons,great beds of feathery papyrus are waving to andfro, and palms can be seen everywhere. This is onthe edge of Victoria Nyanza, and right in the heartof the continent. In the native houses you must take care lest thelizards and scorpions fall on you from the thatchedroofs. You must also tie your shoes tight, lest thejiggers get hold of you. You can see a black stripemoving down the path: it is an army of warrior-ants who will attack you if you get near and whosebites feel like red-hot pincers.
