Dermatographic vascular urticaria. Close-up of a dermatographic (skin writing) rash on a the back of a 53-year-old male patient with vascular urticaria (hives). Urticaria is a skin condition in which a rash of itchy wheals or lumps develops on the skin. It most often occurs as an acute allergic response but can also result from heat, cold, sunlight or, less frequently, other medical conditions like cancer. Vascular urticaria (urticarial vasculitis) is a skin condition characterised by urticarial lesions that appear histologically as a vasculitis (inflamed blood vessels).
