Siegfried has been misrepresented from thefirst to Brunhild as a vassal of Gunther. Hence she claims homage fromKriemhild, and this is angrily refused. The ladies meet before the greatcathedral at Worms, and each insists on entering first. Kriemhild, who haslearned from her husband the facts of Gunthers wedding, proclaims them inher anger with brutal plainness. Brunhild is stricken to the heart, silent withdespair and murderous rage. King Gunther is equally furious that Siegfried should have betrayed theirsecret even to his wife; but he cannot take vengeance on the man who hasdone so much for him. His uncle, the gloomy and terrible Hagen, is less. Germany—The Legendary Attila 521 scrupulous. He plots with Brunhild, and they draw from the too talkativeKriemhild the secret of the one vulnerable spot in Siegfrieds skin. Hagen promises to protect him while he stoops, then guidedby the fateful red cross, drives a deadly spear deep into the heros back. Great is the lamentation when Siegfrieds body is brought home.
