Thermophilic bacteria. Light micrograph of Hydrogenobaculum sp. bacteria in a sample of water from a geyser. These bacteria live in filamentous colonies in water that reaches up to 90 degrees Celsius. The bacteria's proteins have adapted to remain stable when subjected to temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius. Sample collected from West Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, USA.
